Role overview
Ethyca is a high-growth Series A startup building the trust infrastructure of the internet. Ethycaβs platform powers data privacy for businesses facing regulations like GDPR and CCPA all over the world. We do this by building world-class tools, developer-friendly APIs, and secure, deployed applications to make it easy for our customers to integrate all their systems together to provide their users with powerful rights over their personal data.
As Ethycaβs first community hire and leader of this nascent function you will help usher in an exciting new phase in our organizationβs story - the establishment and promotion of a community around open-source privacy developer tools. In our mission to ensure that engineers have the tools they need to bake privacy into existing SDLC processes, adoption, engagement, and advocacy is essential for success. Weβre seeking someone with a proven track record in growing community in technical spaces, as you'll be building from a blank canvas.
This means you are at home engaging with developers where they congregate and have the technical know-how to engage productively. It also means you can interface with a wider content, design, and marketing team to create assets that will add value and increase engagement in the space. And perhaps most importantly, it means youβre a builder; someone who enjoys wearing the many hats needed to grow a community from its earliest stages into a dynamic and diverse ecosystem.
What You Will Do
- Build a dedicated community for privacy engineering developer tools, educating data and software engineers on the value of privacy by design and privacy as code
- Help define open source community management strategy, processes, and goals
- Engage and communicate with our budding community, triage issues for escalation as needed to product & eng
- Work with content creators and designers to help produce value-add content for community discussions and thought leadership in the privacy engineering space
- Own project management for community-oriented event activations
Requirements
- 3+ years in a technical role focused on data engineering and/or software development:Β Your technical skills must be sufficient to authentically engage with our community. Our products serve teams of data engineers and software engineers working on the sharp end of operationalizing privacy in large distributed systems. You will have enough engineering experience to understand the challenges these communities face and how our products help to solve them.
- Experience with cross-functional collaboration:Β an independent yet collaborative operator, your experience managing community independently in a complex, highly technical space means youβve worked with engineering, marketing, design, and product teams and you know how and when to engage each.
- Growing community from scratch requiresΒ demonstrable experience as a builder.Β If you love bringing people together to solve problems and architect solutions, and have done it before, you might be the perfect fit.
- Life in a fast-growing startup requires a different skill set than in a later-lifecycle company. You will need to beΒ comfortable working independently and stepping outside your comfort zoneΒ to tackle new challenges as they arise. It doesnβt mean you have to have worked in a startup environment before, but you do need to be able to show evidence of being a self-starter who enjoys stepping up to take charge and make decisions where needed.
Benefits
- Competitive cash and equity compensation
- 100% medical and dental insurance coverage for you and your dependent(s)
- Remote-friendly office hours and vacation policy
- Sponsored company lunches and events
- Parental leave and 401K plan

Weβre a data privacy company building a missing piece of the Internetβs infrastructure: the trust layer that empowers users and businesses to manage data respectfully. Every day, weβre solving challenges for customers and thinking about the future of human rights as society increasingly moves online. If this sounds intriguing and youβre excited to shape that future with us, weβd love to talk to you!
